Before integration, many Black people and Latinos could not even afford to purchase quality groceries to feed their families. In fact, hunger was commonplace in many lower income non-white communities. In fact, Lyndon Johnson made a speech when he was president mentioning that when he was a teacher in public schools before he became a senator that he would see Latino students come to school in the morning without having anything to eat and still being expected to learn.

More than a few Black teachers who were interviewed in the 1960 up until the early 1980s recited stories of students coming too school with tears in their eyes, recounting stories of how their parents could not afford dinner at times. Having to live off eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or potatoes for weeks at a time! In fact, many poor and lower income Whites experienced similar situations.

Those students were also subjected to receiving out of date text books, lacking any decent science equipment, teachers who , in some cases, did not even have a high school level education, let alone a college degree and were the victims of all sorts human indignities and deprivations. Thus, there was NOTHING GOOD about living under Jim Crow or any form of segregation! PERIOD!
